With everything else that was going on in the world of racing on Saturday, the opening 3-year-old maiden on the card at Dieppe probably wasn’t high on the list of priorities for many racing fans. It certainly wasn’t on mine, hence the slight delay in coming to write my analysis for the card. However, it was worth spending a few minutes watching the replays this morning because the performance put in by the winner, LIFE STUDY, was worthy of more attention.

She is a Kingman filly out of Pocket Square (Night of Thunder) a winner of the G3 Prix des Reservoirs for Roger Charlton who would go on to run with credit in G1 races in the US. The dam is also a half-sister to 3 pattern class performers including the Prix Imprudence winner Better Together. She comes from a strong Juddmonte family and having been sent off at an SP of 3.5 Fav on the PMU, she was clearly thought to be capable of running a decent race on debut under Alexis Pouchin. Henri-Francois Devin has had a reasonable return so far in 2026 with 18 winners from 97 runners (18.5% SR) but he has begun to hit a richer vein of form in the last few weeks, with 5 winners from the last 20 runners that he has sent out. Life Study has had 4 entries in the last fortnight, but having chosen not to run at Saint-Cloud or Craon, her performance on Saturday in Dieppe would suggest that her trainer made the right choice.

This was a newcomers maiden, so at this early stage it is very hard to be sure what she may have beaten, but given the fact that she won by 5 lengths and was entirely dominant once she hit the front, Life Study would probably be the only horse to take out of this race anyway at this stage. This race was run at a reasonably steady pace and the winner recorded a finishing speed of 111%, but that does make her winning distance all the more remarkable. Alexis Pouchin settled her in the middle of the pack and once the field began to fan out across the straight, she showed a superb turn-of-foot to weave her way through a narrow gap to get clear racing room. Once in the clear, she picked up readily and pulled clear with ease, clocking a top speed of 65.2 km/h. The McLloyd sectional times show that she finished with furlong splits of the 11.01 and 11.55s, both of which were race best figures and meant that she was over a second faster than the runner-up for the final 400m of the trip.

Life Study holds no other entries at this stage and having made her debut outside of the G1 tracks, there is perhaps a more cautious approach being taken with this filly. This was a very striking debut and I can’t help but feel that both the visual impression and the data suggest that this filly will be a stakes performer and as a result, she is the first name that needs to be added to the notebook from this weekend’s racing in France.
