Nickel Comet on her way to winning the Prix de Saint-Brieuc, October 2026

PRIX DE SAINT-BRIEUC

Saint-Brieuc - 4th October

Like all good analysts, I shall be starting my analysis of Prix de L’Arc de Triumph day at Saint-Brieuc. Well, maybe not, but I really like the winner of this race and I thought that she was well worth covering in more detail. This race was won by Jade de Grugy in 2022 and whilst I am not suggesting for one moment that NICKEL COMET will go on to achieve the same level of form as that winner, there were lots of reasons to be positive about Louisa Carberry’s 3-year-old AQPS filly. On ground that appeared to be far more lively than ideal (officially “Bon Souple 3,3”), Nickel Comet did appear to roll around when asked for maximum effort and appeared to change her lead legs a couple of times inside the closing furlongs. However, despite that inconvenience, I was really impressed with the way that she picked up when asked by Christopher Grosbois and she pulled readily clear to win by over 3 lengths in the closing stages. With debutantes filling the first 3 places, it’s hard to get a strong gauge as to what this form may be worth, but Nickel Comet was a clear winner despite not having a particularly clear passage through the race.

She sat in mid-division in the early stages, but when one of the horses in front of her began to stop quickly, she had to be driven forward to hold her position and she responded readily. Once committed for home, she kept finding to come over the top of the leaders and ultimately won going away. A Beaumec de Houelle filly, she is the daughter of the G3 AQPS winner Comeca and a half-sister to 2 winners. Her Grand-Dam (Ismenie) won twice in Cross-Country races and there are several Black-Type performers in the immediate pedigree. Owned by Richard Burridge, she was bred by Ecurie Haras de la Rousselerie, the breeders responsible for Un de Sceaux amongst others.

It was an AQPS Flat race over 2,400m at Saint-Brieuc. I like this track, but performances here can often slip under the radar quite a lot and so I think there is a good chance that it could prove profitable to follow Nickel Comet, if she stays in France.
