This weeks Notepad piece looks at the Steeple-Chases run at Beaupreau on Sunday. As a general rule, I would try to stay away from French Chasing when looking for National Hunt prospects, but in the case of yesterday's 4-year-old winner Kosmos Allen, I will make an exception. He is a well-related 4-year-old AQPS gelding by It's Gino (closely related to Eldorado Allen) who made just his 3rd start for the Peltier team when winning this €6,720 prize. He has an unusaul profile, having had just 1 run in an AQPS Flat race and 1 start over hurdles before heading over fences. However, given his pedigree, it is perhaps not so much of a surprise to see him chasing and although this wasn't the deepest race by any means, there was a manner to his victory that offered some hope for a promising career. As a small side note, I would also add that this gives a decent form boost to Kiss Me D'Ex, who got the better of Kosmos Allen in an AQPS race at Machecoul earlier in the year and has now joined Richard Hobson.
Here are my notes on the 2 steeple-chases from Beaupreau;
Bon 3,0
Winner | Race Terms | Time | Réduction Km | Final Circuit |
Kosmos Allen | 4YO Chase (<€6k) | 247.38 | 72.75 | 72.18 |
Forza di Garry | 5YO+ Chase C5 (<€11k) | 250.23 | 73.59 | 71.81 |
PRIX HOTEL RESTAURANT LOGIS ELBEE
A first win for Kosmos Allen who returned from a 6-month break to win by 6-lengths on his debut over fences. He had been pulled-up in the Prix de L’Yonne at Auteuil in March when last seen. Clearly in calmer waters here. Having sat away from the strong early pace, he hugged the inside rail to make his challenge at the 2nd last and asserted as they climbed to the crown of the bend. Winner perhaps ran to 55-kilos here, eased down last 50-yards.
Kashalka finished 2nd having set the pace. She is a 10-race maiden (51-kilos) which does dampen the form a little, though she clearly did too much in the early stages. Kontroverse finished a poor 3rd. She has a rating of 54-kilos with 1 win from 11 starts. All 3 ran from 67kg weights after riders claims.
PRIX TMR // COLINEAU
Forza di Garry made most to win this C5, rallying well when headed after the last to get his head in front in the final strides to beat Haul Plessis. With official ratings of 51kg and 49kg, it is unlikely that either improved in such a low grade race.
